How to properly size a Door Mat
Door mats are used to keep unwanted dirt from being walked into your home by family, friends and even pets. The mat is positioned directly under the required doorframe and can often have clever messages welcoming guests and also reminding them to wipe their feet.
When choosing the right door mat for your home it is important that the mat is sized properly. If the mat is not the correct size it can cause problems with opening and closing doors and it may cause accidents when guests are entering and leaving your home. This step by step guide will help you ensure that your mat is the correct size for your home.
· Choose the door – It is important to know which door the mat will be placed and to choose a mat suitable for the amount of traffic it will receive. When choosing a mat it is important to know whether it will be at the front or back of the house and whether the mat will be placed indoors or outdoors.
· Measure the doorframe – Once you have chosen which door the mat will be placed under and whether the mat will be inside or outside your home it is important to measure the length and width of the doorframe at which the mat will be placed. When measuring the frame make sure measure all frames and any screen doors.
· Measure the area – When measuring the doorframe also measure the area in which the mat will be placed. Measure the number of inches from the concrete or ground to the bottom of the doorframe.
· Measure the mat – If you have an idea of the door mat you would like then it is important to measure the mat to make sure it will fit in the selected area. Measure the thickness of the mat you want. Choose a mat with a shorter thickness than the space between the bottom edge of the doorframe and the concrete or ground.
· Open and close the door – Once you have measured and placed the mat in its position open and close the door several times to check that the mat does not cause any friction and the door can be opened and closed with ease.
This guide will be of most use when sizing an outdoor mat. If you are sizing an indoor mat, as well as these steps, it is important to remember to measure from the lower edge of the right side of the doorframe to the left side of the doorframe, measure from the inside edge to the inside edge and to choose a mat thickness that will prevent any pulling on the mat when opening and closing the door.
Once you have followed these steps your door mat will be sized properly and ready for use.
