Choosing the correct Door Mat Material

Choosing the correct Door Mat Material

Buying a door mat may seem like a simple task but there are a few factors that need to be taken into consideration before purchasing such as your location geographically, the mats location within the building, the season of the year and the amount of use the mat will get. To make it easier when choosing a mat it is important to look at the types of materials that are available. This guide should help in choosing the correct material to suit your needs.

Rubber - These mats while not officially as “green” as other mats on the market they are still environmentally friendly and are usually made from composed or recycled rubbers. The standard size mat will usually be lifted a good half or three quarter inch off the ground, allowing grime, dirt and gunk to fall into the cracks below so you don’t have to sweep it up at a later time.

Bamboo – These mats are probably the most aesthetically pleasing of all of the door mats available on the market but they probably best used for areas that get a lot of heavy rain and not much else. Essentially these mats look like a bamboo raft, they are held slightly above the ground by two bamboo rods running the opposite way. Although they do look quite spectacular these mats don’t offer much protection when up against gravel, snow, mud and salt.

Polypropylene – These mats are made of a synthetic material that is usually woven into a rope and they make a great mat for general use in rainy conditions. These mats are often domestically produced and can tend to cost more than other door mats available today, but this synthetic material is likely to last longer and is more resistant to mildew.

Coir – These mats are made from the rigid and resistant fibre of the coconut husk, a valuable import from India and Sri Lanka. They have remarkably unique characteristics when compared to smaller fibres making them a natural, resilient outdoor piece of furniture. Using a number of fibres that are naturally resilient to water they will not suffer damage from salt water making them perfect for any home.

As with making any purchase, buying door mats does take a bit of product knowledge combined with common sense. It’s not too difficult to determine from looking at a mat whether or not it will be suitable to your home.
